MIT's Class of 2025 Admissions Rate Drops to 4% with Record High Applications

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has admitted 1,340 students to the Class of 2025 from a record 33,240 applicants, resulting in an overall admissions rate of 4.0%. This marks a significant decrease from last year's admissions rate of 7.3%. Of the total applicants, 15,036 applied for Early Action, and 18,204 applied for Regular Action, with admission rates of 4.8% and 3.4%, respectively. The Class of 2025 will be slightly larger than usual as MIT plans to enroll 1,100 students from this year's applicant pool, in addition to students from the Class of 2024 who deferred enrollment.

MIT's Dean of Admissions and Student Financial Services, Stu Schmill, attributes the significant increase in applications to the permanent elimination of the SAT Subject Tests from consideration and the suspension of the SAT/ACT requirement due to the pandemic. Admitted students have until May 3 to decide whether to matriculate.

Schmill notes that the admissions team has given every application the same careful, holistic review, and the admitted students are an exceptionally talented group. MIT is excited to get to know them better through its CP* program in the coming weeks.
