Tufts University Maintains Selectivity with 9.5% Acceptance Rate for Class of 2027

Tufts University has announced that it has accepted students into its undergraduate Class of 2027, with a 9.5% acceptance rate, reflecting its highly selective admissions program. The university reported that the applicant pool for this class exceeded 34,000, setting a new high for early decision applications. The Class of 2027 also marks the most diverse cohort in Tufts history, both in terms of demographics and experiences. Tufts admissions staff conducted more than 500 in-person and virtual high school visits, attended 35 National Portfolio Days, and reached nearly 5,000 prospective students through virtual “Fall for Tufts” programming in September and October.

JT Duck, Dean of undergraduate admissions for the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, called the incoming Jumbos “exceptionally engaged, in the classroom and in their communities.” They shared stories about building inclusive communities, about political involvement, and about entrepreneurial ventures. He added that by virtue of their lived experiences, accomplishments, and aspirations, these students will positively influence the Tufts community. “We look forward to welcoming to Tufts this class of extraordinary learners and doers.”

Women make up 56% of the admitted class, with men at 41%, and non-binary, genderqueer, or those who prefer not to specify a gender identity at 4%. Women also continue to comprise most students admitted to the School of Engineering at 52%. Of all admitted students, 55% attended public high schools or public charter high schools, and 91% of those admitted students attending high schools with class rank are ranked in the top 10% of their class.

The incoming class of 2027 is set to be the most diverse in Tufts' history, with demographic shifts nationwide showing a decline in college-age students in the Northeast, Tufts continues to attract students from across the United States. 28% of admitted students are from New England, 20% from the West, 10% from the South, and 5% from the Southwest. Admissions staff conducted in-person events in 27 states and 16 countries on four continents, including programs in South Korea, India, the United Kingdom, Jordan, and Argentina, among many others. They were also joined by Vernon Miller, director of the Indigenous Center, in outreach to Indigenous communities. The university reported that its reputation is reaching a wider and global population, thanks to a mix of in-person recruitment and virtual engagement opportunities.

The Class of 2027 also reflects the values of Tufts, as it is a diverse cohort of learners and doers who will be the future leaders of tomorrow. With 13% of the admitted students eligible for Pell grants, and 11% of the class made up of students who will be the first in their family to graduate from a four-year college, Tufts is making significant strides towards promoting diversity and equity in higher education.

The university also reported that 95 admitted students have Native or Indigenous heritage, including 62 American Indian or Alaska Native students and 33 Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander students, with 21 students enrolled as citizens of tribal nations and communities. 42% of admitted students speak a language other than English at home or have a primary language other than English, including Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, Albanian, Nepali, Kazakh, and Wolof, among many others.

Tufts University's Class of 2027 reflects a diverse and talented cohort of students from across the United States and globally. The incoming class will be the future leaders of tomorrow, who will positively influence the Tufts community with their lived experiences, accomplishments, and aspirations. Tufts' continued efforts towards promoting diversity and equity in higher education set a positive example for other institutions.
